I personally hate when people present their whole life story before the actual recipe… So here are two recipes that I love - one with coconut oil and one without.
Zero Waste Toothpaste (with Coconut Oil)
INGREDIENTS
2 TBSP Coconut Oil
1 TBSP Baking Soda
15 - 20 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
1 reusable glass jar: about 4 - 6 ounces.
INSTRUCTIONS
Mix all the ingredients together! Yes… it is that easy.
Zero Waste Toothpaste (without Coconut Oil)
This recipe is from Wild Minimalist
INGREDIENTS
4 tbsp baking soda
2 tbsp aloe vera gel
1 tbsp bentonite clay
1 tsp water
1 tsp peppermint oil
10 drops stevia extract
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Mix dry ingredients together: baking soda and bentonite clay
2. Mix wet ingredients together: Aloe, water, peppermint oil and stevia
3. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and whisk with a fork
4. Store in a sealable glass jar
* Important: do not store in metal container, it deactivates the bentonite clay
If you would like more information on the benefits, here you go:
Aloe Vera: Aloe vera kills the bacteria that causes cavities and gingivitis and is anti-inflammatory. It’s also nonabrasive, which is ideal for those with sensitive teeth.
Baking Soda: Baking soda is alkaline and neutralizes acids in our mouth and helps prevent tooth decay. It is mildly abrasive (less so than many abrasive ingredients found in store bought paste) and helps prevent stains.
Bentonite Clay: Bentonite clay absorbs and removes toxins from your mouth, and leaves behind minerals that are nourishing for your teeth.
Coconut Oil: Coconut oil attacks the harmful bacteria in your mouth. It can reduce plaque buildup, prevent tooth decay and fight gum disease. Also consider the Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling with coconut oil for 3 minutes every morning.
Essential Oils: Experiment with these! You can play around with spearmint, cinnamon, and adding in mint leaves. Adjust to the season.
Store bought toothpastes have toxic chemicals in them which you absorb through your gums, tongue, and yes… teeth. Even if buying organic, your toothpaste may still have toxic chemicals. Also, the single use tube your toothpaste comes in is an environmental blow.
Also, good toothpaste is pricey… by making you own you are potential saving $8 - $16 A MONTH!
